Overall, they deserve high praise for how good they are relative to the overall quality of modern defenders and historical standards of individual defense. Best is defined on multiple categories; lockdown ability, help defense (rim protection/clogging passing lanes), and longevity of high-level output. Note: Hand checking is not a rule for standard of defense because back then players were playing by the rules of that era and modern players are playing by theirs, both eras are hard to defend in. It is physically harder in hand-checking eras, but the offensive skill level, scheme, and rules in the modern era favor the offenses way more than back in the 80s/90s making it practically hard as well. Tier III: Great Defenders with some minor flaws compared to Tier I & II

These five players are incredible defenders but have minor limitations compared to the very best of the best (often either size/position limitations or overall defensive coverage compared to other positions, primarily wings/guards vs bigs which naturally have high-impact on defense).

• Kobe Bryant: Bryant was a lockdown 1-on-1 defender in his prime. He had a competitive fire that allowed him to guard the opposing team’s best perimeter option. He racked up 12 All-Defensive team selections (9x First Team, 3x Second Team). However, in the latter half of his career, those selections were sometimes based more on reputation than output because of his heavy load on the offensive end. He could fall asleep on off-ball coverage on defense occasionally. But when locked in, he’s one of the greatest perimeter defenders of all time.
• Sidney Moncrief: The recipient of the first-ever Defensive Player of the Year awards in 1983 and 1984. He was the anchor of the Milwaukee Bucks team on defense. He was physically strong, fundamentally sound, and could guard multiple positions as a 6’3 guard. He was incredibly tough to blow past. His prime was unfortunately cut short due to knee injuries.
• Bruce Bowen: Bowen was a master of the dirty and psychological game of defense. He played during the San Antonio Spurs dynasty and was task to guard the opponents’ perimeter star in the playoffs, most notably LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, and Dirk Nowitzki. He had an 8x All-Defensive team selection. His physical play and footwork are legendary, though he was not much of an interior rim protector or offensive threat, limiting his overall game.
• Gary Payton: “The Glove” is widely regarded as one of, if not, the greatest point guard defender in NBA history. He is the only point guard to win the Defensive Player of the Year award (in 1996) alongside Marcus Smart in 2022. He has 9x consecutive NBA All-Defensive First Team selections (1994-2002). He could pick up opponents’ full court and get under their skin with his elite trash-talk. Being a point guard, his rim protection value is naturally lower, but his perimeter control was historic.
• Scottie Pippen: Pippen is arguably the best perimeter defender of all time. He had a 10-time All-Defensive selection (8x First Team, 2x Second Team). His long arms, quick feet, and high IQ allowed him to guard point guards through power forwards. He revolutionized the point-forward position on both ends of the floor. His presence allowed Michael Jordan to take breaks on the defensive end. His only knock is he played alongside Michael Jordan and Dennis Rodman for some of his best defensive years, although his tape alone shows he is an absolute elite unit.

Tier II: Game-Changing Defenders (Rim Protectors/Interior Forces)

These five big men have altered entire offenses with their sheer presence. They possess the size, instincts, and athletic ability to lock down the paint, which historically yields the highest value in defensive metrics.

• Ben Wallace: Wallace is tied for the most Defensive Player of the Year awards with 4 (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006). He was the anchor of the 2004 Pistons championship team. Undersized at 6’9 to guard traditional centers, his unmatched strength, quickness, and anticipation made him the best interior defender of the early 2000s. He averaged over 3 blocks per game in three different seasons.
• Dikembe Mutombo: Another 4x Defensive Player of the Year winner (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001). Mutombo is famous for his finger wag after blocking shots. He ranks 2nd all-time in career blocks with 3,289. He was a force in the paint, altering countless shots and commanding the entire half-court defense.
